As you all know, the 16th and the 17th showed SNSD giving awesome performances at their record-breaking Into The New World concert in Taiwan; which were great nights for SNSD and Taiwan-SONE alike.
However, putting a damper on the celebratory vibe, one entertainment news channel centred their report about lip-synced performances, which meant that the girls ended up drawing negative feedback from certain media outlets and their ever-present critics. Recently, it’s apparently become something of a ‘hot topic’.
Surprisingly, the unprecedented hero of this story is SME, the girls’ entertainment agency. They issued a statement on the 20th saying;
“During the most recent concert in Taiwan, SNSD performed and sang over 30 songs live.
“There were some songs where they lip-synced due to the strong choreography, but we did this only to emphasize the dancing and to put on a better on-stage performance for the Taiwanese fans to enjoy. We’re saying this again, SNSD danced and sang live to most of their songs for both their Taiwan concerts.
“And because the Taiwanese fans saw SNSD putting in their best effort, they passionately cheered them on throughout both concerts. SNSD was also aware that this was their first independent concert in Taiwan as well, which is why they put on an even more passionate performance – but to hear controversy over just a few songs in which they lip-synced only to emphasize the dancing is really unfair.”
Fans who attended the concert and also fans who attended the Seoul date have also brought light to the fact that only 2-4 songs were lipsynced out of the 33-36 songs performed, and that the songs in question were the more dance-oriented performances or solos. Most of the concert was live, and a very stable live at that, the fans say. With a Korean come-back with “Hoot” around the corner, just having released their Japanese single “Gee”, and flying between Taiwan, Korea, Japan and Singapore within such a short amount of time, I’m surprised they even had the energy for 2 nights of concert-goodness.
Anyway, basically, this can all be chalked up to the media focusing on small things and blowing them out of proportion just to get more attention. So take pride in our girls’ performance level and don’t even pay attention to deluded antis saying that they are anything but great entertainers. To tell the truth, SNSD have barely lipsynced at all since their ITNW days, and they really only don’t sing when they are tired/sick, or it’s on a stage that doesn’t have a sound system that can support nine mics.
On another note, it’s surprising to see SM Entertainment addressing an issue this small. It may have something to do with the fact that SM are scurrying to get into SNSD’s good books as contract renewals are coming up, or maybe it’s just that SM know how much of an asset SNSD are and are protecting their “Asia No.1” reputation. Either way, good for them. ^^
In other news, with around 24,000 fans in attendences and tickets completely sold out, the night was a success and SNSD set a record for the largest Taiwan concert for a foreign female artist. Yay them~

I love SNSD, and I know they are hardworking girls
but they do lipsing ALOT for singers. More than any other singers in kpop, no offense. Maybe they should give more attention ot their vocals. Just my opinion, althought I think Taeyeon and Seohyun are good

Most of SME’s negative reputation has always been overblown…
Anyway, great to see the girls are doing awesome and that SM is standing behind them.

Is it true that the contract renewals are really coming out?
But they debut later than SJ, but SJ haven’t had their contract renewals yet?
elizabeth said:
I have no problem with them lipsyncing, especially as they have been so busy lately, snsd truly are hardworking! and they have proved their vocal abilities on many other occasions. Name one other k-pop group that doesn’t lipsync occasionally? However, sometimes I do wish a bit more emphasis was put on their singing and I do think it was significantly more than 3-4 songs lipsynced although not all of them.
Is that true about contract renewal coming around soon? How soon is that?
Mark said:
It was around half and half.
hydeist said:
i was at the concert and really, unless you were looking hard for it, you couldn’t tell they were lip-syncing.
in fact, i was expecting them to conserve their energy for the 17th, but thank God they didn’t :p
Mark said:
Most of the first act is DEFINITELY lipped, like Genie… as for solos, Jessica’s isn’t live and Tiffany only does the acoustic part live… they use pitch correction when they do sing live though.
They dance enough to make up for it though!
bps said:
tiffany really sing for her solo, u can check it as the music suddenly gone at the nearly end of the umbrella performance in taiwan (101016),she still sing it live. so it’s not only her acoustic part. but i do agree about the few first parts of the concert.

Taiwan should just be happy at least SNSD go to their country and stop making the controversies.

i’m a taiwan sone and i have go to 17th concert. To say the true~the taiwan media say they lipsyncing? I don’t care~3X song and 3 hour LiVE just 2-3 lipsync and show the dance to the fans I think is perfect. BTW i pay my money and i want to enjoy this concert. Actually i really enjoy it, so that’s enought.

i really don’t understand how people can be so stupid. allright,
it’s not about them not being professional or not being able to sing. cause that’s exactly the point! we all know they can sing, let alone their solo performances. these girls proved a thousand times that their vocal abilities are brilliant. so why all the hate? it doesn’t make any sense hating SNSD, because they didn’t lipsync all the time, but only when necessary. and as stated before, they clearly show their singing abilities. this is what i call professionalism! they chose carefully when to show their singing abilities and when to focus on dancing. this is just fussing over nothing. damn those antis always blow things out of proportion.. SNSD FIGHTING!!! ❤
Dre said:
not im repeating Greentee’s comment about me..
im only there were like button in your comment XD
yes, they do such measures if necessary… why would they destroy their vocals… singing 20 songs gives you alot haggardness so please ANTIS(DIE) try to understand…
>.<
why don't you try singing non stop. while at the same time dancing…
they are performers..
dont you ANTI's see it.
darn it(please do excuse me)
its not like taiwan is the last place to have their concert, so why have them suffer singing all songs live…
aigoo~~~
anyway just ignore them let them be(ANTIs)
So Nyuh Shi Dae Fighting!!!!
4hyo said:
all that singing could really take a toll on your voice and so what they were lip singing big deal. it’s not like they were using somebody elses voices and we know the girls sing. lip singing wasnt a bad idea because singing can conflict with dancing, especially if the moves are fast paced and technical.
mmmm said:
the girls can do whatever they want. they are professional. i love and trust whatever they choose to do!
SNSD said:
LOL at the thought of SM ‘scurrying to get in good’ with SNSD because the contract renewals are coming up.. SM OWNS SNSD. SNSD has no more control over their slave-like contracts than any other idol does. It’s unfortunate but that’s the way it works.
bps said:
but let just hope that SM actually learned from D**K case. as SM shares increase dramatically from SNSD performance this year, I think SM is trying to play nice to the girls since the girls value is really high. and therefore I hope the girls in the end will get a better life.. if not, one D**K case is enough, SM cannot imagine if there are two…
lk2500 said:
All the girls have proven time and time again that they all have beautiful voices. If they want to lip sync a few songs so they can give us a better dance presentation and/or save their voices then more power to them.
Antis will be antis, there is no reasoning with them.

we can’t bend the water(ANTIs)
all we can do now is support the girls… besides well just waste our energy. its just that at some point we can’t hold on our anger towards them. we just love the girls that even sometimes we lose our calmness with such issues made by ANTIs.

Most of Taiwan’s entertainment news coverage is like junk mail, hit the “delete and block” button and ignore for good. They will exaggerate the smallest things to sell news or just to make a big fuzz. Basically if anything garners a ton of attention for whatever reason, they will nitpick the heck out of it with negative remarks just to ride the wave of popularity. SME should probably consider taking legal action for slandering.
We SONEs know what SNSD is capable of, we’ve seen them perform the lip-synced songs countless times on TV we don’t need anymore confirmation that they can do it. If I was at that concert I wouldn’t change a thing, let them lip-sync and dance to perfection. I’m a huge Michael Jackson fan and he use to lip-sync all the time at concerts too, because it’s just much more amazing to watch him focus on the dancing, an old trick but it works. Taiwanese media needs to get their heads out of the sand, SNSD performed a majority of the concert live so they really have no point.
LadyIgraine said:
Its funny that they are the first country that actually pointed the lip synching issue. All of the ITNW tour concert had some parts lip sync and even Shanghai, China didn’t complain about. With over 30 songs to sing, there’s no way that all of them would be sang live. If the fans who went to see the concert had a great time and didn’t complain, then I don’t know what’s the big deal about lip synching what a 3-4 songs out of 30+ songs.
kim said:
i think its because they messed up so many times maybe it threw people off.
maztah said:
yeah there were just 2-4 songs that were lip sync. But I already know this from the start because it was with the heavy dance. It’s better to watch it while soshi doesn’t sound out of breath.

I am a Taiwan SONE. I am really sorry about the news of lip-synced performances that reported by Taiwan News 😦
I went to the concert last weekenk. Actually, all of Taiwan SONE were satisfied with girls’
performances. However, the News and Media SUCKS. They always report without fact and
proof. And they always want to find bad news from artists…Taiwan SONE are relly angry with
these reports. From this time, many of us want to against the news of Taiwan.

I flew to Taibei in the name of visiting my folks when in fact was to see if I can catch SNSD in concert because they couldn’t do a solo concert here in Los Angeles (why not??). Then I found out tickets were all sold out fast and I couldn’t even get scalper tickets.. I was drenched by rain in my suit at the ‘little giant egg’ place looking for scalpers with good tickets.. came up empty-handed. Hope they understand how some SONE goes the full length to see them in concerts.. I think the lip-syncing situation is okay consider their schedules are hectic and they ALL have to learn several languages of their songs and dance to them and fly everywhere to promote them. I personally think the lip-syncing is bad practice, but if they sing 2-4 songs out of the 33 songs by lip-syncing, I would still pay $500 USD for a ticket, which btw, was not even enough for a scalper front seating ticket I heard… SNSD fighting!
RagingXL said:
The Taiwanese media just never does any research and just babble without facts. To them and to anyone who still think SNSD can’t perform those 2-4 opening songs live, please do yourself a favor and do a quick search on Youtube, and you’ll find hundreds of videos of them performing Genie and Girls’ Generation live without lip-sync.
It was a conscious decision by the production team to have them lip-sync so they can maximize the visual effects of the dance routines, and that’s what you’re paying to see anyways. The media blew this lip-syncing issue out of proportion because they just had to ruined an otherwise perfect weekend of Soshi concerts. Not only that, they kept calling the T-SONEs 宅男, a Chinese expression equivalent of “Otaku” – losers with no life. They’re an insult on intelligence and a disgrace to the Taiwanese fans who treated the girls so well.

SME is NOT a ‘hero’. It was their duty and responsibilities to clarify this issue. I am very shocked it took SME this long to defend their biggest commercial asset. I am very upset they took their sweet time to even clarify something we already knew months ago.
Yes, I don’t mind a little lip-sync since they had to do over 30 songs in a concert, which none American artists have done in 1 single concert I believe. I much prefer them sing 15 songs in one concert and no lip-sync at all.
