First off, thanks to Rizky (crazy51) for IMing me to tell me about this. Had a haert attack at first but really nothing major 🙂 This is what she wrote on the discussion board on our chat:
A fan account of upcoming Strong Heart revealed that Taeyeon said she’
s no longer the leader of SNSD. She felt so burdened being a “leader” that in the end, the other 8 let her free. So SNSD has no leader from now on.Hmm. Well, I guess it doesn’t change anything actually. Taengoo once said how she never felt like a leader and how everyone on the group lead each other in a way.
So yeah, I just hope that lil pervy dork will have less stress from now on…
I hope people don’t overanalyze this just yet. According to the Strong Heart acct Taeyeon said she was talking with the girls about hardships of being the leader and they agreed she can be free of the title, it’s not like Taeyeon stepped up and announced that she will quit you know. And we don’t know if this is something official or it’s just one simple honest talk from those girls’ 5 min sessions.
The account was out last week and soon fans started to speculate and worry like on this thread now so they decided to delete the account and asked not to pass it around, which is why I didn’t talk about it last week. I guess it got leaked again today.
I think this whole idea is more about girls saying “Hey Taengoo don’t worry we’ll all share the duties and be leaders with you together”
Another account said she didn’t talk about this as if it was a big deal so let’s not worry too much about it for now and just wait for the show~ She sang that popular carol by the way “chestnuts on the roasting fire…”

What does the leader do?
Nonetheless, this is no big deal because of their large number they tend to do more things on their own when they are not singing.

I mean, what you said about them not needing a leader is true, because they all lead themselves and stuff… But man, I’m gonna miss Tae as the cute dorky Kid Leader! D:
the stress factor will be for the mostpart gone though I suppose, which is good. She was a great leader~

it seriously scared me for a bit and i even started TO MOURN. but this made me feel a lil’ bit better.. got this from someone who commented on the same allkpop page of Taeng no longer a leader of SNSD.
There is no different leader. SNSD will function without one. Of course that’s sorta weird to say. SNSD fans should know by now that every member is a leader. That was what Taeyeon always wanted and strived for. She didn’t want to be a frkn dictator. She always let the others step up when they wanted to. So really, nothing changes much. Just that their’s no title of leader in the group. Everyone is now a leader in SNSD. It’s always been like that, but now it’s just set in stone

poor taengoo. i guess we’ll have to see with the actual episode of ‘strong heart’, but i honestly wouldn’t mind if she stepped down from her leader position. like you stated, soshi is such a tightknit group that they don’t really need a leader.
but i wonder if it was just more like personal pressure that taengoo placed on herself. i mean, just because she steps down as ‘leader’ doesn’t mean any of her activities will stop (like hosting ‘chinchin’)… so in the end, she might still be stressed X_X
at least now we’ll hear a more varied “jigeumeun…” XD

anyway, i don’t think this is such a biggie, taeyeon is still in the group, she just wont be taking all the responsibility and stuff i guess?
everyone take turn doing the cheer at the beginning right? anyway, i hope she get the rest she deserve so she can be stress free when they comeback =]

It was clear from the first — such as in “Go To School” — that Tae didn’t have the temperment for leading. Jessica often took that role.
The role must not be nothing, however, else TaeYeon wouldn’t find it stressful. It’s a middle management position. The company and the manager(s) are above the leader. The leader probably just has to herd the team, speak first during interviews and promos, etc. Park Gyuri would often wake her KARA team mates.
I would disagree that American groups don’t have leaders. The leader may not be described as such, but often a group has someone who is the most important — writes the music, is the most popular, formed the group, makes business decisions, etc. A leader isn’t a usually a dictator and doesn’t control every aspect of the band — the other members will often have a say — so the political structure isn’t so obvious.
In SNSD’s case, they have been practically leaderless anyway due to Tae’s reluctance. I doubt they will notice much of a difference — other members will become adhoc leaders when necessary.
For the most part though, the leader wasnt usually the one speaking first in interviews. It was pretty much whoever had anything to say, they’d just speak up. Though I’ll admit, Tae was more on the quieter side compared to the other talkers of the group. Not saying her role was nothing obviously..
Reason I say I don’t see leaders in American groups is that NO ONE comes straight out saying, “Yeah I’m the leader. These are the members.” Sure there are certainly the more popular ones but when you look at the old boy/girl groups, they weren’t writing the music and certainly not making business decisions. Now if you look at bands..say My Favorite Highway which I’m quite familiar with, the guys don’t name anyone a leader. I see it more as a group effort. Everyone pitches in with the writing of lyrics and the managers control the money aspect.
no more kid leader? 😦 even though it won’t change much, it makes me kinda sad. at least taeyeon is still in the group!
i think maybe the 8 other members will sometimes forget about taeyeon’s resign since they are used to it. for example, when any reporter asks hard question, they will hand it to taeng, as usual
I’m shock at the fact that SM actually let her step down, but not that she stepped down. I understand the pressure she must have had… from the start and even till now, I never got the “leader” vibe from her… but I think most korean groups take it for granted that if u’re oldest, u’re leader.
^I agree jess seem to have taken a leadership role more, as time passed by and we watched more shows, it seems that Hyo and Soo were more of a leader….
one positive thing about kid leader is that she had the best vocals of the group, so it made sense for her to be leader… i mean leader doesn’t always have to sing best… iunno whati’m saying.. i guess there are diff kinds of leader.. and diff reasons makes them good leader.
leader or not…i still love taengoo… leader is just a title… I still feel she act leader like even though she claim she has no leader quality.
She has always been the quiet one letting other talk instead of her hogging the mic and talk as a leader. I think its her way of caring for her members and letting them shine. I feel she does step up on behalf of snsd when there is something important and no one is prepared to do so.
and ppl still refer to her as leader.

I feel a burden being a “leader” so in the first week of my leadership, I will let the other 9 members eat all kinds of food to their hearts content(I’m planning on changing our group’s name to “Chubby Generation” how about that for starters!) ^_^

Didn’t the grace say something similar as well? Dana was the technically the leader but then they said they didn’t have a leader and that they are equal.
Yeah. CSJH the Grace also said that they have no leader :]
I personally don’t think that being a leader of k-pop group means that much on a group, but I’m pretty sure the title comes with great (burdening) responsibility to its holder. Taeyeon herself always seems uncomfortable being labeled as leader since the get go. Plus isn’t it obvious that she talk less nowadays in the group? She’s been in this let-the-others-but-me-shine mode or something
Earlier this year, she even said, “I may be the leader by words, but by action I don’t think I act like one. At moments, I think all 9 members became leaders. So I don’t like calling myself Taeyeon the leader. I want all of us to lead and guide each other.” And I believe they have been leading and guiding each other very well.
Though honestly, I think Taeyeon is the best “leader” for SNSD because she mediates the girls instead of leads them. Heh. idk if this even make sense.
Oh well, then again we haven’t see the show yet… It’s Strong Heart, so we can’t actually tell in which context she said this. She could be joking or something. Whatever it really is, I just hope Taengoo won’t be stressed out and feel pressured from her role anymore. Him nae Kim Taeyeon!
Ohhhhhh Taengoo just introduced herself as “SNSD’s leader Taeyeon” few minutes ago on MBC Family Day radio (where she exchanged radio show with other MBC radio host). And Sunny whom Tae called, also mentioned how Taengoo is the leader and what not.
[Whaa. Is that mean they lurk on soompi/akp/intenational k-pop blog? because Korean fans knew about this fan-account like last week and decided to not make a big fuss about it. Only today, the rumor “leaked” to international fans… Hmmm.]

that’s really interesting. after a long time of saying she’s snsd’s taeyeon, she now introduced herself as the leader.. hmmm, we won’t really know what she really said if we haven’t watched the video yet. if she’s still the leader then everything must have just gotten out of hand.

i think Tae’s the best role model for a leader in SNSD as well coz she’s great at peace-making and pacing the girls.
But maybe being a leader is holding her back coz like you said, she’s “been in this let-the-others-but-me-shine mode” for sometime now especially on variety programs.
Still….i’m not gonna make any assumptions till i’ve watched Strong Heart or till SNSD makes a stand on this.
Either way, i think she’s doing a great job.

It’s not confirmed, I heard it was just a rumour..
Even if she wasn’t SNSD’s “official” leader, she’d still be the leader.
As it is, the other girls still look up to her and rely on her, and she obviously feels like she has to be strong for them.
Even if she wasn’t the leader, she’d still keep this kind of love for them, therefore, she’d still be the “leader.”
she’s like their mom though anyway, so formal title or not, she’s still baller.

Lest we forget people!, and no she didnt die! I really liked Taeyeon as the ‘kid leader’ because it was so appropriate! and even if she did step down my admiration for her has not fallen in any way!
I don’t believe that she will quit as the leader but if ever it’s true, let’s just look on the bright side: at least she will get all the rest the she wanted and she will be free from all the stress burdening her as the leader. Our kid leader needs a break too.

aw. i hope taengoo hasn’t stressed herself too much with the leader role. it really doesn’t seem so important now that the girls have more experience of being together. also the girls have done fabulous jobs at keeping it together during those times taengoo were sick. i’m sure they’ll be fine without a leader role assigned to anyone. ^_^
hey all 9 of them are 1 anyways, so leader or not, SNSD would not change at all. our dorky Taengoo Umma will still be the same, just w/o the title burdening her, if that rumor is indeed true. and hey, maybe, just maybe, w/o the burden of being a “leader” pushing down on her, she might grow a bit. maybe the reason why she’s short is ‘cuz of the burden of being a leader. well, i guess the other danshins might not like that, especially sunny, who won’t have her dandyu partner 😀
